6 Reasons to Visit a Cosmetic Orthodontist

Posted on: May 16th, 2018 by Dr. Laura Morgan

Are you wondering if visiting a cosmetic orthodontist is right for you? If so, we suggest visiting our office for an examination. In the meantime, here are some very easy to identify signs that you should straighten your teeth using clear braces or aligners.

#1 The midline of the upper and lower teeth do not line up

Even people who do not have traditionally crooked teeth may have a smile that is less than perfect because the midline of the upper and lower teeth do not line up. This is the contact in between the center front teeth. They should be identical between the upper and lower teeth so that it makes a straight line. If the teeth do not make a straight line up-and-down, it may be due to a cross bite or crooked teeth in general that can be corrected using braces.

#2 The upper teeth cover too much of the lower teeth – an overbite

Some patients visit us because their upper teeth cover so much of the lower teeth that they are not clearly visible, making for an awkward smile.

#3 An open bite

When biting down, the upper teeth should overlap the lower teeth and it should be impossible to see inside the mouth. When the inside of the mouth and tongue are visible it is because of an open bite. This condition can also lead to discomfort in the face and jaw so it is wise to use orthodontics or oral surgery to correct it.

#4 An overjet

This is one of the more common bite issues. Whenever teeth protrude too far forward it is called an overjet. In this case, it will be necessary to see an orthodontist to determine the best treatment

#5 Overcrowding

If there is not enough room in the mouth for all of the patient's teeth, it can lead to overcrowding where teeth grow in sideways or on top of one another. This can create an unattractive smile and also lead to a variety of health complications. Since it will be easier for food to become trapped in between teeth that are crammed in next to each other, a person with overcrowding has a greater risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

#6 Gaps in between teeth

Using cosmetic orthodontics, we help a lot of patients to close gaps between their teeth. Sometimes, people can have otherwise straight teeth but still have awkward gaps. It is possible to close them and a cosmetic orthodontist can do so rather quickly.

Types of cosmetic orthodontics

Once a patient has decided that they are interested in correcting the problems above or another issue they are having with their smile, it becomes necessary to determine which type of orthodontics is the best solution. Cosmetic orthodontics are discrete which is why so many adult patients prefer them.

The two main options for this procedure are to use clear ceramic braces that are bonded to the surface of the teeth or to wear clear aligners that are made of durable plastic and are removable. We will be happy to discuss both options in greater detail during a consultation.
